Beneath this apparently bare patch of soil is a colony of predatory bulbs. These bulbs lie in wait under the soil for their unwary prey, then they leap out of the ground and attack en masse. Each year, attacks from bulbs of this kind kill hundreds of people in the Amazonian rainforest.
