The Gliese 581 system has been known to possess planets since the early 21st century. One planet orbits within the habitable zone although the planet is too massive to be habitable. Refer to the references for details of these planets.

In the Local Space universe, the Gliese 581 system does not possess a habitable planet or moon. However, it does have a small space station where researchers live while studying the planets in the system.

Gliese 581 is in a useful location in the Stargate Network, and has three stargates connecting it to nearby systems. It links 61 Virginis and Gliese 667 A, and the system has a steady trickle of space traffic between these two systems.
